According to the dog specialists earlier representatives of large dog breeds such as Mastiffs, Newfoundlands and Saint Bernards were called "mat dogs". Curled somewhere near the fireplace and dreaming about all the events they’ve encountered during the day, even now these dogs (and dogs in general) may often resemble a fireplace rug.
Other interesting facts about dogs’ sleep:

large dogs sleep more than small ones;

dogs may sleep 12-14 hours a day;

elderly dogs, puppies and stressed dogs sleep even more;

pet dogs sleep more than working dogs and wild dogs.
