To start reading this article from the beginning please click here When listing the content of protein, fat and other ingredients of the feed, in most cases, the manufacturer specifies the content of these substances in the feed (so-called crude protein, crude fat, etc.), but not the digesting amount of these substances.
Therefore, the lower the quality of raw material for feed, the lower the digestibility of the components of finished product. This is especially actual for proteins. High quality protein should contain the optimal ratio of all essential amino acids (they are not synthesized in the body and must come with food), but still its digestibility will not reach 100%.
Digestibility of the protein depends on many factors, the main one among them is its source, processing temperature and inhibitors. The more connective tissue contains the raw material, the more reduces its digestibility.
The highest percentage of protein digestibility is in muscle meat. Dogs metabolize worst of all the proteins got from raw herbal ingredients, however, obtained by special treatment, soy protein isolate and corn protein are absorbed much better than the original product. There are animals that are unable or almost incapable to digest vegetable proteins, primarily from soy. This is reflected in a significant increase in stool, and disturbances of the digestive system.
Depending on the quality of the protein, the level of indigestibility can reach up to 50-80%. Prolonged heat treatment, causes coagulation of the proteins, reduces its digestibility and the activity of inhibitors that help the body to decompose proteins.
Modern technology uses short-term heating of raw materials at very high temperatures, thus improving digestion of proteins.
In conclusion, it may be assumed that the same protein content in various feeds does not mean the same digestibility and biological value for the dog.
Therefore, the typical thought: the more proteins contains the feed, the better it is for the dog – is wrong. In this case, the quality is more important, and not the quantity.
When choosing feed for breeding a dog, it is very important to pay attention on these issues.
It should be also mentioned that some dog breeds, that often suffer from allergies (Chow, Shar-Pei etc.) need smaller amounts of protein (big amounts may cause allergic reaction), and dogs of very active breeds (Pit Bull etc.) - bigger amounts.
That is why when choosing the most suitable food for certain puppy it is so important to get a piece of advice of an experienced breeder, that deals a long time with this particular breed.
This will help to avoid mistakes (sometimes non-recoverable) and choose quickly the desired feed.
Feeding with high-quality feed often costs more expensive than feeding with natural products.
The most suitable feed for a particular dog can be chosen only by experience, but it is not desirable to change the type of food very often (you should change food gradually, usually this process lasts for 3-7 days).
If you noticed any disorders of your puppy's health, you should immediately remove this kind of food, of course if you are sure that the problems with health occurred after the beginning of its use and other causes are excluded.
If the feed is chosen properly the puppy is active and cheerful, his digestive system is functioning without any problems, the animal is healthy, in good mood and without allergic reactions, and also it has healthy coat.
